Steve Jones
Head Men's Soccer Coach
Steve Jones is in his second year as HBU head soccer coach. In 2007, Jones led his team into NCAA Division I competition after restarting the soccer program last season, competing as a member of the NAIA and the Red River Athletic Conference.
In that first and final year of NAIA competition, the Huskies, who had not fielded a soccer team in 16 years, posted a record of 10-7-1 and an RRAC tournament runner-up finish. After that successful campaign, six Huskies received all-conference honors.
Jones came to HBU from Texas Wesleyan University where he spent four years and led both the men’s and women’s teams to the 2005 Red River Athletic Conference championships. At TWU, Jones led the women’s team to four playoff appearances and a record of 40-30-2, while coaching the men to a 36-33-3 record and three playoff appearances.
Prior to Texas Wesleyan, he was the head women’s coach at Judson College and then the head men’s coach at Northwood University. At Northwood University, Jones posted a four-year record of 43-38-2 and led the Knights to two Red River
Athletic Conference championships. At Judson, he coached the women’s team to a 31-30-2 record over three years, leading his 1997 team to an NCCAA regional championship.
Jones has coached collegiate teams to 15 playoff appearances, including four conference championships, four NAIA regional semifinal appearances, the NCCAA regional championship and an NCCAA national tournament appearance. He has been selected as conference coach of the year six times.
In addition to his collegiate coaching experience, Jones served as assistant coach for the Texas Toros, a semi-professional team in 1998. He also has organized and directed youth soccer camps for over 17 years and has coached several club soccer teams in California, Illinois and Texas, leading two teams to state cup championships.
Jones also played college soccer, beginning his collegiate playing career at Bakersfield College where he was named to the all-conference team in 1990, leading his team in goals and serving as captain.
He continued his career at Fresno Pacific University where he was instrumental in winning a conference championship. Jones
completed his playing career at Judson College, helping his team to the 1992 NCCAA national championship before earning his bachelor’s degree.
He served a year as a high school coach before returning to Judson and becoming the head women’s coach. In 1998, he took a college select women’s team to China on a mission trip. Jones also served as a scout for the Dallas Burn professional soccer team from 1998-2000.
He and his wife Misty, HBU’s women’s soccer coach, are the parents of two sons, Brandon, eight, and Trevor, three. |
